Following Burk Uzzle
Steven Kasher Gallery is now showing a major exhibition of Burk Uzzle, named American Puzzles. Uzzle is a well-known American photojournalist. In addition, he is member of Magnum Photos and he has twice been elected president of this prestigious organization. Mostly, he has created his images by traveling across the United States with his 8 x 10 camera. In his photographs you can enjoy a universe full of truth and veracity. However, there are other frames with a mix of fantasy and surrealism. I haven't heard about this photographer before, even so, I was astonished by the beauty and fascination of his images. Uzzle's photographs are surrounded by creativity, invention, and grand imagination. He has the ability to capture the right moment, the fleeting instant and the talent to transform the ordinary into extraordinary.
For example, in his photograph St. Louis Airport, St. Louis, 1967 light defines the perspective. As well as, Brand New Highway, New Mexico, 1970 where the thick white line in the middle lures the viewer to follow the road, even though you are you able to see the rest of the path. There are images where he uses minimalism to express his art, and there are others with an eerie concept, like Shoe Tree, Nevada, 2003. With a naked eye, you see an ordinary tree full of birds, but there are not birds at all. Curiously, it is a tree full of shoes.
Frequently, Uzzle includes in his images shapes, strong forms, unusual adjacencies, abstractions that create puzzles, patterns in different dimensions, and sometimes he uses the ambiguity of space, such as, Desert Prada, Texas, 2005. At a glance, I was delighted by the colors on the frame. On the background there is a beautiful blue sky with a mix of purple. The lighting inside the store is quite green. On the other hand, looking carefully the frame has a touch of surrealism. It is difficult to believe that this story really exist in the middle of somewhere. Uzzle’s photographs are distinctive for being in black and white, although, Desert Prada in full color. Desert Prada photograph is unique and precise work of Uzzle.
No only I enjoyed the visit to the gallery, but also the photographs shown on the exhibition are impressive and powerful. Definitely, Burk Uzzle’s images are amazing artworks.
